Jordan MacWilliams - 2006 World Champion

On Friday June 23rd, nineteen year old Jordan MacWilliams brought home the Gold World Championship in Men’s 1st Degree Sparring! He had to travel to Little Rock, Arkansas to compete in the finals after finishing in the Top 10 over the past year of competition. Representing Master Karpiuk’s Black Belt Academies in Surrey, Jordan beat his first competitor 5-0 in the winner take all event. In his second match he scored a jump reverse side kick just as time was to run out, winning 2-0. His final match was over in less than 45 seconds as Mr. MacWilliams stunned his opponent by scoring three times to the head and winning 5-0!

It was Jordan’s first trip to the World Championships held every year in Little Rock and hosted by Grand Master Soon Ho Lee. The Championships cover a weeklong schedule of training seminars, Black Belt Testings and Taekwondo tournament with over 6000 competitors, the largest of it’s kind in the United States.

Jordan is the only second Canadian in the World Traditional Taekwondo Union to hold the title of World Champion. He would like to thank his instructor Master Karpiuk for preparing him, his fellow students for their support, his parents for their encouragement and lastly God for giving him the ability and strength to achieve this goal.

The first Canadian Master !

After years of intensive training, and thousands of students taught, Scott Karpiuk of Surrey British Columbia achieved what is the first for a Canadian. On June 17th 2005, Scott Karpiuk received his Mastership Title from Grand Master Soon Ho Lee and the World Traditional Taekwondo Union. The induction ceremony took place during Opening Ceremonies for World Championships in Little Rock Arkansas. Over 10,000 spectators witnessed this historic event - which centred around the 50th Anniversary of Taekwondo.

In 1984, Mr Karpiuk started his training, in Springfield Missouri. 22 years later, he has reached this milestone - as 6th degree black belt . He has been instrumental in bringing Grand Master Lee's style of Taekwondo to Canada, a style that focuses on character as well as skill development. Master Karpiuk has traveled extensively and has used martial arts as an opportunity to speak to young people about making positive life choices and how to deal with Drugs, Alcohol and Peer Pressure

In addition to martial arts training, Master Karpiuk graduated with an Education Degree. A man of quiet personal integrity, it has been the combination of this education degree, his dedication to martial arts and his joy in seeing people develop that has made Scott so effective with an unwavering ability to bring out the best in his students. Many of his students have followed in his footsteps and have also opened their own schools or clubs.
